Malvern Festival Chorus are proud to be celebrating their Centenary with this performance of Bach’s glorious St Matthew Passion in the equally glorious surroundings of Worcester Cathedral.

Perhaps Bach’s grandest musical composition, the sacred oratorio, which will be sung in the original German, calls for two separate orchestras and choirs which perform separately and together throughout. It tells of the events leading up to and including the crucifixion of Christ. The gospel story is related by The Evangelist, while other soloists sing the words of the various characters and the chorus participates in the drama with either responses from the crowd or the disciples, and at other times by reflecting on the events of the story.

Malvern Festival Chorus are particularly excited to be joined in this performance by their President, the internationally acclaimed tenor James Oxley, singing the role of The Evangelist with bass Giles Underwood as Christus. They will be accompanied by the popular period instrument ensemble, Musical and Amicable Society; other soloists are Soprano Louise Wayman, Alto Helen Charlston, Tenor Tom Raskin, and Bass Henry Neill.

MFC Musical Director Jonathan Brown conducts.
