WODYS is celebrating its 35th year with a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End hit Whistle Down The Wind; a captivating musical for everyone, with a cast of 60 WODYS youngsters, aged 8 to 18.
The musical is based on a 1961 British film, directed by Bryan Forbes, screenplay by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, from the novel by Mary Hayley Bell and starring her daughter, Hayley Mills.
It follows a group of children who discover an escaped prisoner in a barn, whom they take to be Jesus and vow to protect. The fight between children and adults over the fate of the fugitive is a struggle between bigotry and innocence, updated from the original setting to 1960s American Deep South.
The sensational score combines hauntingly beautiful love songs and explosive rock music with lyrics by acclaimed rock'n'roll songwriter Jim Steinman. It includes the rousing gospel opening of The Vaults of Heaven, through pulsating numbers such as Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts, via the lilting melody of the title track Whistle Down the Wind and the song which became a No 1 hit for Boyzone, No Matter What.
