2017 will mark a momentous milestone in the history of WODS – 125 years in the making and still going strong.
It was on 17th February 1892 that a meeting was held at Mr Sparks Music Shop, 12 High Street, which resulted in the creation of Worcester Operatic Society. The first production, staged at the Public Hall on 30th and 31st May 1892, was HMS Pinafore and so, 125 years on, to commemorate that significant anniversary, WODS are going right back to the beginning and are re-visiting (not for the first time) the company’s inaugural 1892 production by bringing our audiences a new rendition of that same show. This time, however, it will be an expanded version showcasing WODS strengths in the 21st Century, entitled HMS Pinafore… and Other Infernal Nonsense.
Under the pretext that there is going to be a Charity Benefit Concert on board ship that night, the Second Act will begin with a half hour cabaret of various musical numbers with a nautical theme. At the end of this section, the show will melt seamlessly back into Act Two of Pinafore, before ending the show with a mini Last Night of the Proms incorporating audience participation with Rule Britannia, the Sailor’s Hornpipe etc. It will be a show in which the cast and the audience will celebrate together. Please come and join us and let the party begin!
